Basic Shape Snowman

What’s Christmas without a cute snowman craft? This one is not only cute, but this basic shape snowman helps to reinforce shape recognition and basic cutting skills.

Supplies:

  1. Light or dark blue construction paper (background)
  2. White construction paper (snowman)
  3. Black construction paper (hat)
  4. Brown construction paper for arms
  5. Construction paper for scarf (any color)
  6. Assorted spangles
  7. Glue sticks
  8. Tacky craft glue
  9. Scissors
  10. Cups (three different sizes)  for tracing snowman body
  11. White glitter or salt
  12. White paint
  13. Q-tip or pencil

Basic Shape Snowman:

Begin by tracing three circles using the three different sized cups that you chose.

Once traced, allow your child (if they are old enough to use scissors) to cut out their circles and glue them onto the blue background. The shapes in this craft are very foundational so they are easy even for young children.

Next, cut out a square and rectangle for the hat. I drew these shapes by hand and then cut them out. Like circles, these shapes are fairly easy for a child to cut on their own. Glue the hat on your snowman.

Let your child place everything! It’s perfectly ok if it ends up looking like this!

For the scarf, I used a pair of Fiskars scissors to get a fancier look but you can use regular scissors too. Again, the scarf is composed of simple rectangles.

To give the basic shape snowman texture we smeared glue (glue stick) all over the snowman and then sprinkled with salt or glitter. Salt will give you the same texture as glitter without the sparkly mess. I know how some cringe at the thought of glitter!

Decorating the snowman was so much fun! I set out a plate of assorted spangles and let my little one choose eyes, a nose, mouth, buttons and even a decoration for the hat. You’ll want to use the tacky glue to attach the sequins to ensure they stick to the glitter. You can also add arms to your snowman using the brown paper. We used one rectangle for each arm. So cute!

Finally, for a snowy effect, we stamped white circles all around the snowman. I can never find Q-tips when I need them so I use a pencil eraser! Just dip the eraser end of the pencil in the paint and have at it! If you want to add texture to the snowflakes, sprinkle them with the salt or glitter while the paint is still wet. The result? One adorable snowman!

Happy crafting!
