September Sight Word Fun

It is quickly approaching my favorite time of year everyone! Can you guess what that is? Fall! I love absolutely everything about the fall season. The beautiful colors throughout the trees, the crisp cool air, the smells, and of course the tastes! When I am teaching my kids, I love to incorporate seasonally themed activities. Today, I am going to share my September Sight Word Fun activity printables that I have been working on so that you will have the opportunity to try them with your own family! I will also give you my recommendations for sight word games. Read on!

Teaching Sight Words

Let’s be honest, learning sight words can be somewhat boring. We all know the importance of learning them. But how do you teach something like sight words without the mundane repetition and standard flash cards? Don’t get me wrong, using repetition and flashcards are both very useful in memorizing sight words, but they just aren’t very fun! Kids need a variety of activities in order to help them truly grasp a new concept. Some are more hands on and simply cannot learn just from seeing a word over and over again. My own child is more of a hands-on learner, and loves to do fun worksheets. I designed these printables with my own child in mind, so they are kid tested and approved!

September Sight Word Fun

The September Sight Word Fun printable set is the first in a series that will be coming out each month. It includes five sight words: I, can, we, the, at. Each set of activities includes each of these words. They are black and white, which gives your child the opportunity to color them once they have finished the task.  The first activity is a sight word search. On the apple tree, your child or student will locate and circle the sight word.

Next, the child will complete a maze to get the hungry worm to the apple! They must be careful to follow only the correct sight word (no cheating!) to get from one end to the other. The apple has been moved to different locations for each sight word to make it more challenging and fun! If they want to, they can also color the worm and apple once they have completed the maze.

More Sight Word Fun

The next activity uses three different skills, cutting, ordering and illustrating. Your child will first cut out the words from the sight word sentence, then paste them to match the correct order. Once they have completed this, they can use the space provided to draw an illustration to match the sentence.

For the fourth activity, the child or student will circle the sight word, being careful to only choose those that are spelled correctly. They will then trace the sight word multiple times before writing the word multiple times on their own in the lined space provided. This is a great way to help them practice their writing skills while helping that sight word stick to their brain. The more they see and write it, the more familiar they will be!

Each sight word includes a mini sight word reader that you can read together with your child. The pages include a very short sentence containing the sight word (in bold letters) and then a picture that can be colored. These booklets are a fun way for your child or students to practice putting the sight words into action.

Last but not least is a sight word sorting activity. You have some different options when it comes to using this activity. The pages could be laminated so that it can be used over and over again. You could laminate and then perhaps add magnets to make it usable on a magnetic board. Or, you could simply let your child sort and glue the seeds onto the correct mat. However you choose to do it, I am sure it will be fun!

Sight Word Games

As you can see, there are a variety of activities here to help making learning a sight word a little more interesting. Each month I plan to release a themed set of activities, each containing five new sight words, so stay on the lookout for those! You can follow me on Teachers Pay Teachers to stay up to date on new releases. If you would like to download the September Sight Word Fun set, head over to my store and check it out. It is completely free!  If you are looking for some more great ways to teach sight words, here are my two all time favorite sight word games:

Sight Word Swat

This game comes with so many sight words! If you have a child that is active, then this game is for you! You can choose the amount of words that you want to use at a time, spread them out and then begin calling out words one by one. As you call a word, your child must locate the bug with that word and then “swat” it with their swatter. My child loves to do this (maybe a little too much!)

Sight Word Bingo

Bingo is a game loved by many. There is a themed bingo game for just about anything you can think of. Like any bingo, sight word bingo involves each child or student getting a card and bingo chips. As the words are called out, the child locates and marks the word if they have it. This is done until someone yells, “Bingo!”
