ABC Animal Craft

If you are looking for some fun animal alphabet crafts to help practice and reinforce letters of the alphabet then you’ve come to the right place! We love making crafts in our home and we equally love animals! Using an ABC animal craft is a great way to teach letter sounds and also creates a cute keepsake for your kids. As we finish each letter, I put it into a binder (or you could make a book). This is something that will be fun to look back on later :).

Crafts are a fun way to reinforce letter sounds and can be adapted to fit a wide range of skill and interest levels. If you have a younger child, you could pre-cut the pieces so that they only have to be put together. Older children should do just fine cutting out the pieces on their own. Each letter craft that I have made includes the templates that you will need, along with the suggested colors and a printed example of the finished product.

What you will need:

  • Construction paper (variety of colors)
  • Glue sticks (you could also use sticky dots if your child hates glue like mine)
  • Child scissors (if your child is doing the cutting)
  • Pencil to trace the parts onto construction paper (again, if your child is cutting)
  • Googly eyes are optional if you prefer to use them rather than printed eyes
  • markers/crayons (optional) if you want to add extra details or something to the background

Even though my child is old enough to cut at this point, I prefer to cut the pieces out ahead of time. The focus of this craft is not really working on cutting skills but rather the letter sounds. If your child is a perfectionist, they may put too much emphasis on cutting and get frustrated. This takes all of the fun out of the activity! They will still have a lot of independence here as they are in control of how the animal gets put together. I always show my child what the finished product looks like as guidance, but allow your children the freedom to make their animal alphabet craft how they choose. They are much cuter that way anyway :).

ABC Animal Craft Example

Today I will provide a basic tutorial using one of my animal alphabet crafts that can be applied to any of them. In this post, I will show you how we put together the giraffe. Giraffe, of course, is for the letter G. The G provides the body and long neck of the animal. Here is what you need for this letter:

  • Orange, yellow, brown, black and white construction paper (unless you’re using googly eyes)
  • Googly eyes (optional)
  • glue
  • letter G template and parts (included)

Start by tracing and cutting out the letter G from yellow construction paper. This will give you the body of the giraffe. While you should let your child choose the placement, you do want to watch that there is enough space at the top for the head!

Next, cut out the head and eyes. I always ask my child if they would prefer to use paper for the eyes or using googly eyes. Both options would work just fine so it’s up to you! If using paper, glue the eyes together and then place them on the head. Once you have all of the face parts attached/drawn, you can glue the head onto the body.

The last part of this craft is the giraffe’s spots. The spots also provide a unique touch because each child can use as many as they want and place them wherever they want. No giraffe is the same after all! If you have a child that does enjoy cutting, now would be a good opportunity to let them. The spots are not perfect circles, so your child could make spots of all shapes and sizes.

And there you have it! An adorable giraffe for letter G! Simple as 1, 2, 3… or I should say A, B, C! Each craft is put together in a similar manner. Some are more involved (more pieces) than others depending on the animal. Feel free to make it your own by adding some details to the background! I hope you will enjoy making these ABC animal crafts with your kids as much as I did!
