What is Kiwi Co?
What’s Kiwi Co you ask? Well, its a company that sends a neat little brown box full of fun activities right to your doorstep. There are many different packages to choose from, based on your child’s age and interests:
- Panda Crate (ages 0-24 months)
- Koala Crate (ages 2-4)
- Kiwi Crate (ages 5-8)
- Atlas Crate (ages 6-11)
- Doodle Crate (ages 9-16+)
- Tinker Crate (ages 9-16+)
- Maker Crate (ages 14 and up)
- Eureka Crate (ages 14 and up)
Today I am going to review the Koala crate as this is one that I have personally used. They are all pretty similar though in contents, but get more advanced as the child ages.
Kiwi Co Subscription
Lets first talk about getting a subscription. This company allows you to choose which crate/s you want in your subscription, the frequency and how many boxes you want. Prices start at $19.95 per monthly box or as low as $16.95, when you prepay for a year. You can also choose to simply buy crates individually in their store. This might be a good option if you are hesitant to sign up and just want to try one out first. In the long run, a subscription will save you money (and who doesn’t love that?!)
Koala Crates
I have two young children, so I chose to go with the Koala Crate. When you sign up for a Kiwi Co crate, you will give them some basic information on your child so that they can help you find the best fit. We were always excited when our little brown box of goodies showed up! They are very thorough when it comes to instructions for each activity, so no need to worry if you aren’t the crafty type. Each box comes with a booklet for the instructor/parent as well as an activity booklet for the child.
The parent booklet gives you detailed instructions on how to complete each craft, as well as extra teaching tips. You can even find links and ideas for even more activities related to the specific topic. In the children’s activity booklet, you will find games and short stories with adorable characters. Your child won’t even realize that they are learning! The activities are engaging, fun and very easy to do. You may find that some crates are easier than others. You may even find that you need to bump up a level if you feel that the activities are not engaging enough.
What’s In The Box?
Aside from the little booklets that are included in each box, you will find all that you need to complete each activity! (minus scissors/glue). The craft supplies are neatly packaged and its very easy to determine which craft each little kit belongs to. I love not having to gather a lot of my own supplies! Everything you need is right there at your fingertips! I also love that these crafts are simple enough that your child can have the satisfaction of completing them on their own!
Music Crate
One of the more recent crates that we completed was the “music” crate. We love making music in this house! Just like most crates, it came with three age appropriate crafts: xylophone, tambourine and banner. Everything we needed for the crafts were neatly packed inside!
As I mentioned before, it comes with a parent booklet that has detailed instructions on how to complete each of the activities. They are very easy to follow. Keep in mind, this particular crate is for 2-4 year olds so it is pretty simple in nature so that children can complete most of the activities independently.
Crafts and Skills Learned
It might seem like just a box of crafts, but if you really stop to think about it, your child is learning too! The first craft we made was the xylophone, which took the longest. My child was able to do the entire craft independently except for needing a little help with the rubber bands. This craft can be used to teach size order (longest to shortest), rhythm, patterns and composing!
Next, we moved on to the tambourine. It was a cute koala shape with four bells to attach. If you wanted to take it up a notch, it could be painted or decorated, but we chose to keep it simple. This craft could be used to teach lacing skills as well as work on fine motor skills (the bells themselves had to be threaded). Again, it was simple enough that my child was able to do almost all of it on her own. I simply helped to ensure that the string stayed tight.
Finally, we worked on the banner. This was by far the simplest of the three. It is not a musical instrument, but instead can be used to wave around to the music that is being played by the xylophone and tambourine. The banner can be stamped with the stamps provided, or colored with marker which is what my child wanted to do. When all the crafts were done, we made our own little band and played some music. It was so fun! The banner can be used to teach patterns, moving to a rhythm and encourage physical activity.
So far we have made a barn with adorable farm animal puppets, a rainbow pillow, a bug lantern and monster costume, just to name a few! My little one still sleeps with her rainbow pillow that she proudly decorated and stuffed on her own! It has held up nicely!
When you are all finished, you can open up the child activity booklet that contains a story with cute characters, activities such as mazes, and other craft ideas related to the topic of your box. It is yet another way to make the box not only fun, but educational as well.
Is Kiwi Co Worth It?
I would say, YES! It is definitely worth giving it a try! As I mentioned before, you don’t have to dive right into a subscription. You can always check out some of the products first. Even if you do choose a subscription, you can always pause it when you feel you don’t need it or are too busy to get to them. I have had to do that a few times, and it was never a problem to pause or resume! There is absolutely no hassle! So instead of sitting your kids down in front of the TV all summer or hearing “I’m bored” for the millionth time, grab a crate from Kiwi Co and get crafting! Enjoy and have a great summer vacation!
